O’Shea stands by decision to keep playing Collaros after QB was hurt in Grey Cup

Former Mets captain David Wright will be honored this summer in a dual ceremony, taking his rightful place in franchise history. The former Mets third baseman who played all 14 years of his Major League Career in Queens will be inducted into the team hall of fame and have his number retired July 19, ahead of a game against the Cincinnati Reds at Citi Field. No. 5 will be enshrined forever, marking the third time in the last two years the Mets have taken numbers of franchise greats out of circulation. Darryl Strawberry and Doc Gooden had their numbers retired last season as a nod to their link on the 1986 World Series team. Wright’s No. 5 will be the 10th number taken out of circulation, one of the highest honors in sports. However, no other Mets player has worn No. 5 since Wright left the game following the 2018 season. Third baseman Mark Vientos now wears No. 27, but wore the same number as Wright did while growing up in Florida as a nod to his favorite player. He also used the same walk-up song, “I Got 5 on it” by Luniz. Back and neck injuries ended his career prematurely and limited him to only 77 games from 2015-2016. Wright fought through the degenerative conditions throughout his career, but still managed to become one of the most prolific players of his era. A Cooperstown candidate, Wright still leads the Mets all-time lists in the most career doubles, walks, RBIs and runs scored. He’s second behind Strawberry in home runs, and also won two gold glove awards, two silver slugger awards and was named to the All-Star team seven times. He received MVP votes six times and finished as high as fourth in 2007. After his curtain call in 2018, Wright had career totals of 242 home runs, 390 doubles, 26 triples, 970 RBI, 196 stolen bases and 761 walks. He finished his career with a slash line of .296/.376/.491. Nicknamed “Captain America” for his performance in the 2013 World Baseball Classic, Wright was also the fourth captain in Mets history and no other player has held the title since. The Mets have recently broken with a long standing trend of only retiring the numbers of players elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame, and while Wright is currently on the ballot for the second year, he’s not a lock. But he legitimized the Mets in a way few others had during a time of organizational turmoil and performed admirably through pain and losses on the field, always serving as a model representative of the organization. It’s a Wright-ful celebration for an important player.Nvidia's stock dips after China opens probe of the AI chip company for violating anti-monopoly laws

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Anaheim Ducks forward Trevor Zegras will be out for six weeks after undergoing surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his right knee. Zegras had surgery Thursday, the team announced. Zegras was injured last week on a fairly innocent-looking play during the Ducks’ 4-1 loss to Vegas in Anaheim. Zegras and William Karlsson only briefly got their skates and stick blades entangled, but Zegras needed help to get off the ice after taking a fall. Zegras’ torn meniscus is his third major injury in just over a year, although a torn meniscus is likely a fortunate outcome for a knee injury that could have been much worse. He was limited to 31 games last season by two injury setbacks, including a broken ankle that required surgery. Zegras has four goals and six assists in 24 games this season for Anaheim, which had lost four straight heading into its road game against Toronto on Thursday night. The Ducks surprisingly activated forward Robby Fabbri from injured reserve before they faced the Maple Leafs. Fabbri had arthroscopic knee surgery on Nov. 15 and is progressing much faster than his initial predicted timeline of six to eight weeks. ___ AP NHL: https://apnews.com/NHL

A businessman described as a “close confidante” of the has lost an appeal over a decision to bar him from entering the on national security grounds. The man, known only as H6, brought a case to the (SIAC) after then-home secretary said he should be excluded from the UK in March 2023. Judges were told that in a briefing for the home secretary in July 2023, officials claimed H6 had been in a position to generate relationships between prominent UK figures and senior Chinese officials “that could be leveraged for political interference purposes”. They also said that H6 had downplayed his relationship with the Chinese state, which, combined with his relationship with Prince Andrew, represented a threat to national security. At a hearing in July, the specialist tribunal heard that the businessman was told by an adviser to the prince that he could act on the duke’s behalf when dealing with potential investors in China, and that H6 had been invited to Andrew’s birthday party in 2020. A letter referencing the birthday party from the adviser, Dominic Hampshire, was discovered on H6’s devices when he was stopped at a port in November 2021. The letter also said: “I also hope that it is clear to you where you sit with my principal and indeed his family. “You should never underestimate the strength of that relationship... Outside of his closest internal confidants, you sit at the very top of a tree that many, many people would like to be on.” In a ruling on Thursday, Mr Justice Bourne, Judge Stephen Smith and Sir Stewart Eldon, dismissed the challenge. The judges said: “The Secretary of State was entitled to conclude that the applicant represented a risk to the national security of the United Kingdom, and that she was entitled to conclude that his exclusion was justified and proportionate.” The Home Office confirmed in July 2023 that H6 would be excluded from the UK as he was considered to have engaged in “covert and deceptive activity” on behalf of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) and that he likely posed a threat to national security. The now-50-year-old former civil servant brought legal action for a review of the decision, arguing that it was unlawful. The tribunal in London heard that H6 had said he avoided getting involved in politics and only had limited links to the Chinese state. His lawyers also argued that there was evidence that it was difficult for a Chinese national involved in business to avoid any contact with the CCP and that material related to his relationship with the prince had to be read in the context of an advisor writing to someone who had been loyal to him in difficult times. However, Home Office lawyers argued that H6 had downplayed his links to an arm of the CCP and that his relationship with Andrew could be used for political interference. In their 53-page ruling, the judges said that Andrew could have been made “vulnerable” to the misuse of the influence H6 had. They said: “The applicant won a significant degree, one could say an unusual degree, of trust from a senior member of the Royal Family who was prepared to enter into business activities with him. “That occurred in a context where, as the contemporaneous documents record, the duke was under considerable pressure and could be expected to value the applicant’s loyal support. “It is obvious that the pressures on the duke could make him vulnerable to the misuse of that sort of influence. “That does not mean that the Home Secretary could be expected to exclude from the UK any Chinese businessman who formed a commercial relationship with the duke or with any other member of the Royal Family.” The three judges said that H6 had enjoyed a private life in the UK, which had been described as the businessman’s “second home”, adding: “He has settled status, a home and extensive business interests in the United Kingdom. He was regarded as a close confidant of the duke.” The judges continued the home secretary was “rationally entitled to decide” there was a potential to leverage the relationship, adding H6 was “not candid” about his links to the CCP. They concluded: “In our judgment it was open to the SSHD to take a reasonably precautionary approach to the risk, and to take action rationally aimed at neutralising it so far as possible. “Whilst excluding the applicant would not necessarily halt his activities, it would significantly hinder them. “Cultivating relationships with prominent UK individuals would logically be much more difficult if no meetings could take place in the UK.”

The premier said in a statement Friday that while the two parties are distinct and won't always agree, they have "many shared values." Eby's party won a bare majority with 47 seats in the October provincial election, while two Greens were elected and the B.C. Conservatives have 44 seats. He said the deal sets out specific areas of action they'll work together to achieve, which includes health care, affordable housing, creating livable communities and growing a strong, sustainable economy. "This agreement will strengthen the stability of government and help deliver on the priorities of British Columbians. We will continue to work with all MLAs who want to make the legislature work for people," Eby said. The stability of the NDP government got even shakier earlier this month when New Democrat Grace Lore announced she had cancer and was stepping away from her role as children's minister. B.C. Conservative Party Leader John Rustad has said he would work to bring the NDP government down if it continues with its "destructive policies." According to Bloomberg, Apple has been developing the chip, code-named Proxima, for several years. The chip is expected to debut in iPhones and smart home devices starting next year, replacing technology currently supplied by Broadcom. Apple didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. This move would align with Apple's ongoing effort to design more of its own core components and expand its hardware ecosystem. A custom-made chip could also improve product performance and better power advanced features like AI on its devices.
