In a milestone for China, the world’s biggest auto market, EVs hit 50% of new car sales in July. That included pure battery EVs plus plug-in hybrid electric vehicles. Chinese companies such as BYD continue to gain traction worldwide with their inexpensive EVs. Widespread EV adoption could significantly address climate change. Here are five facts about EVs this year. Most of the data comes from consultancy Rho Motion. The global EV market, including pure EVs and plug-in hybrids, grew by 25% year-over-year as of November. Rho Motion estimates 15.2 million EVs had been sold worldwide ahead of the end of the year, and the International Energy Agency expected electrified vehicle sales to reach one in five cars sold globally. Most were in China. Mexico sold roughly 5 times as many EVs this year than last, mostly from Chinese powerhouse automaker BYD, according to Rho Motion. In Norway, which for years has been in first place for share of vehicles that are electric, 90% of new cars were EVs. The best-selling pure electric vehicles were the Tesla Model Y, followed by the Tesla Model 3 — both globally and in the U.S., according to Rho Motion. The Model Y SUV was released in 2020. Its base version today costs nearly $45,000. The Model 3 was released in 2017. The least expensive version sells for around $42,000. Both have been eligible for a $7,500 tax credit in the U.S. Tesla’s market share stood at 17% of all electric cars across the globe through October, according to Rho Motion. In the U.S., Tesla’s market share was 49% through October. That means the company still has the biggest EV market share. But its hold is shrinking as other auto companies combined sell a growing number of electrics. For example, GM, Ford, Honda and more are offering a wider variety of EVs at lower prices and sizes and are chipping away at Tesla’s longstanding lead. Pension New Guideline: Additional Compassionate Pension for Super Senior Citizens: There is great news for super senior citizens. The central government will now give the benefit of additional pension to pensioners aged 80 years and above. According to a recent notification of the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, the central government will give additional pension to these pensioners in the name of compassionate allowance. Pension Ministry issued new guidelines The Ministry of Pension has also issued new guidelines regarding pension for retired employees of Central Government Civil Services who have attained the age of 80 years. The purpose of the guidelines is to simplify the process of distributing these additional allowances. As per the provisions of sub-rule 6 of Rule 44 of CCS (Pension) Rules 2021, pension and compassionate allowance will be given under the rules after the retired government employee completes the age of 80 years or more. How much additional pension to people of which age? Senior citizens aged 80 to 85 years will be eligible for 20 percent of the basic pension, while pensioners aged 85 to 90 years will get 30 percent of the basic pension. Senior citizens aged 90 to 95 years will be eligible for 40 percent of the basic pension and those aged 95 to 100 years will get 50 percent. Super seniors aged 100 years or more will be eligible for 100 percent of the basic pension. Understand by example- Pensioners born on 20 August 1942 will be eligible for additional pension at the rate of 20 percent of the basic pension from 1 August 2022. Pensioners born on 1 August 1942 will also be eligible for additional pension at the rate of twenty percent of the basic pension from 1 August 2022. When will the compassionate allowance be effective The notification of the Department of Pension and Pensioners Welfare states that the additional pension or compassionate allowance will be effective from the first day of the month when the pensioner reaches the prescribed age. These additional pension payments are designed to help pensioners manage the increasing cost of living with increasing age. The notification states that all departments and banks involved in pension and pension distribution have been directed to disseminate information about the new pension guidelines, so that all eligible pensioners can get proper benefits without delay. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — A state attorney in Florida told his staff he can't legally help take over his seat because Gov. Ron the Democrat from the office, according to an internal email obtained by The Associated Press. An executive order issued by DeSantis in 2023 suspending then-State Attorney Monique Worrell from office is still in effect, argued state attorney Andrew Bain in a message sent to staff on Monday. The governor appointed Bain to the 9th Judicial Circuit to replace Worrell, who beat him in last month's election to retake the Orlando metro area's top prosecutor's office. “While I accept the results of the election and wish to do everything I can to ensure the Office is successful going forward, I do not yet feel I can assist her in that transition,” Bain wrote. Worrell's new term is slated to begin Jan. 7, 2025. She is one of two elected state attorneys, both Democrats, who DeSantis has removed from office. Worrell failed to prosecute minors and didn’t seek mandatory minimum sentences for gun crimes, putting her central Florida district in danger. She disputed his criticism as false and . across the U.S. have called Democratic prosecutors' decisions into question. Bain said in the email shared with the AP that Worrell's suspension must be resolved by either another executive order by DeSantis or a decision by the Florida Senate, which reviews the cases of elected officials suspended from office. “Without one of these things, I do not feel I can lawfully assist in a transition to an individual whose lawful suspension was ,” Bain wrote. “We are living through an unprecedented legal event without clear answers.” Representatives for Bain did not respond to phone and email inquiries from the AP. A statement posted to the state attorney's website Monday appeared to contradict Bain's message to staff. “The state attorney is ready and willing to ensure a smooth transition,” reads a message released by the agency's public information office. “The state attorney’s term ends Jan. 6, 2025, and he will no longer be in office. Ms. Worrell’s term will begin Jan. 7, 2025.
