Garrett Wilson has experienced a lot of losing in his three seasons with the New York Jets. Ten losses in his rookie year. Ten last year. And 10 — and counting — this season. The latest came Sunday, when New York held a late lead at Miami but blew it and lost, something that has been an embarrassingly way too common theme. “When you’re up in the fourth quarter, all of a sudden it starts to feel like you have a losing problem,” the wide receiver said after the Jets’ 32-26 overtime loss . “You have a gene or some (thing).” It’s as good a theory as any at this point, especially for frustrated fans who have watched the Jets (3-10) miss the postseason for 14 straight years . It’s the longest active drought in the NFL, a skid that also currently tops any franchise in the NBA, WNBA, NHL or Major League Baseball. “Losing hurts in general,” right guard Alijah Vera-Tucker said Monday. “So when you stack up those L’s, that’s obviously not where anybody in this building wants to be. That’s not anybody’s standard at all.” Instead, these Jets are setting dubious marks. They have lost a franchise-worst five games in which they held a fourth-quarter lead. And they’ve done it in three straight games. RELATED COVERAGE Mayfield says streaking Bucs will have to play even better down the stretch to return to playoffs Steelers believe they’re Super Bowl contenders. The next 3 weeks will see if they’re right Tua Tagovailoa’s strong play has helped keep the Dolphins’ playoff hopes alive New York has nine consecutive losing seasons, also the longest active skid in the NFL. The Jets couldn’t even enjoy what interim coach Jeff Ulbrich said Monday was Aaron Rodgers’ “best performance of the season.” The 41-year-old quarterback threw for 339 yards — ending a 34-game 300-yard passing drought in the regular season — and a 3-yard touchdown pass to Davante Adams. It wasn’t enough. Not when the defense and special teams were having costly breakdowns. Again, with the Jets holding a late lead. And losing. The AP Top 25 college football poll is back every week throughout the season! Get the poll delivered straight to your inbox with AP Top 25 Poll Alerts. Sign up here . “I wouldn’t say more frustrating, but probably equally frustrating,” Ulbrich said of the latest loss. “There has been, in my opinion, seven games that have come down to the end of the game and have been within one score and we didn’t get it done, and for a lot of different reasons when you look at the span of that seven games. “But we haven’t been good enough in those moments, and we need to be.” What’s working The passing game. The Jets’ offense with Rodgers hasn’t been nearly as dynamic through the air as most expected. But it has come alive lately, and probably not coincidentally with Rodgers overcoming some nagging leg injuries. The 300-yard game at Miami had Rodgers looking more like the vintage version of the four-time MVP. He was 27 of 39 passing with a season-high 8.7 yards per attempt, leading the Jets to a season-best 402 total yards. “I thought he did a very good job, and obviously the statistics would support that,” Ulbrich said. “He had an excellent day. I thought the offense had probably their best performance of the year.” What needs help Defense vs. the screen. Tua Tagovailoa made quick work of the Jets’ defense with a quick release and the Dolphins’ use of screen passes. Ulbrich counted 12 of them. “I’ve never been a part of a game like that,” he said. Ulbrich credited Miami for offsetting New York’s aggressive front and slowing it. “I’m taking a hard look at our screen defense,” he said. “We need to be better vs. the screens. Sometimes that’s from an execution standpoint and that’s sometimes from a call standpoint. So we’ve got to make sure that that type of day doesn’t occur for the defense. And I have a big part of that.” Stock up LB Jamien Sherwood. With C.J. Mosley going down with various injuries, Sherwood’s playing time has increased in his fourth season — and he has produced. He had 18 total tackles, including 13 solo, against the Dolphins and added to his team-leading season total. Sherwood became the first player in the NFL to have 18 or more tackles, two or more for losses and one pass defensed since Denver’s Alex Singleton did so in Week 6 of the 2022 season. Stock down Special teams. Anders Carlson made all four of his field-goal attempts, including a go-ahead 42-yarder with 52 seconds left in the fourth quarter. But his kickoff on the ensuing play was returned 45 yards by Malik Washington, helping set up Jason Sanders’ 42-yarder with 7 seconds remaining. Carlson acknowledged he was supposed to kick into the end zone for a touchback but mis-hit it. The coverage unit also fell flat in limiting Washington’s return. Injuries Ulbrich had no new information on the injuries to RT Morgan Moses, who hurt his left wrist in pregame warmups and left after the first half, or special teams ace Irvin Charles (knee). ... RB Breece Hall (knee) and CB Sauce Gardner missed the game, but Ulbrich said “I’d like to think they’ve got a chance” to play Sunday at Jacksonville. Key number 0 — The Jets had no hits on Tagovailoa, who threw 47 times. “As soon as he snapped the ball, the ball was gone,” Sherwood said. What’s next New York heads to Jacksonville next Sunday, when the loser will move up in the draft order. The Jets currently hold the No. 7 spot, according to tankathon.com, while the Jaguars (3-10) are at No. 5 entering Monday. ___ AP NFL: https://apnews.com/hub/NFL

Eddy Grant and Donald Trump have reached a settlement in the singer’s copyright infringement lawsuit over the Trump campaign’s use of “ Electric Avenue ” in an online video promoting his 2020 reelection campaign. U.S. District Judge John Koetl filed notice that the parties had reached a settlement, but a sum was not disclosed. The judge also wrote that the case was discontinued with prejudice but without costs. In September, the judge found Trump liable for copyright infringement, leaving unresolved the issue of whether a jury should be convened to decide an amount. Grant has asked for $300,000 and lawyers’ fees in the four-year-old case. Grant sued Trump in 2020 over an animated video that mocked then-President Trump’s opponent, Joe Biden, with “Electric Avenue” playing in the background. The clip was posted on Twitter without asking Grant or paying a song license. But Trump’s legal team claimed that the use of the song was fair use, in that it was political commentary. The judge, though, had described the video as “a wholesale copying of music to accompany a political campaign ad.” There has been a long line of artists who have objected to Trump’s use of their music at campaign rallies and elsewhere, including the Foo Fighters, ABBA, Celine Dion, Jack White, Johnny Marr of The Smiths and the estate of Sinead O’Connor. In September, a judge ruled that Trump’s campaign had to stop playing Hold On, I’m Coming as singer-songwriter Isaac Hayes ‘ family pursued legal action.EFF leader Julius Malema is set to challenge MK Party president Jacob Zuma over “unpaid legal fees” and he has his eyes on the former president's multimillion-rand Nkandla home. Malema has been aggrieved about MKP’s recruitment of former red berets leaders over the past three months. Several members of the EFF, including Malema’s former deputy Floyd Shivambu, have joined Zuma’s party. Speaking to thousands of party supporters outside the Constitutional Court, Malema assured them he would fight Zuma, including going after his assets. “We brought Zuma to the Constitutional Court and we said, ‘pay back the money,’ and he paid back the money and has not forgiven us for that. All the cases we won against Jacob Zuma he never paid the legal fees. Zuma owes us legal fees. We have a court order that he must pay us our money. He has not complied with the court order,” he said. “We have instructed our lawyer to attach Nkandla so that the man pays back the money. We want our money. He wants to play dirty, bring it on, bring us our money tomorrow [Wednesday] otherwise we are attaching Nkandla.” The EFF had brought scores of its supporters to the apex court where it was challenging parliament’s decision not to adopt a Section 89 panel report on Phala Phala. In 2016, the ConCourt ruled Zuma should pay back some of the money spent on improvements to his home in Nkandla. The EFF was involved in the legal row. It could be argued that the EFF was among Zuma's biggest critiques and ultimately led to his downfall after several years of ridicule in the National Assembly at the hands of the red berets. “We will not play nice with people who are playing rough with us. We are not in a church here, people cannot fight us and we give them roses. The fight is on. The fight is about defending the soul of the EFF and the unity of the EFF.” Malema's fierce rebuke of Zuma was evident during the party's activities over the past few days. In Limpopo, Malema sent a strong warning to his detractors within the party promising to deal with those who seek to betray him. This was followed by a speech in Gauteng were Malema told party members that the MK Party would not succeed in destroying the EFF. On Monday during a media briefing, Malema called the MK Party its enemy despite their alliance in parliament. Malema's theatrics are likely caused by growing dissent within the party as it prepares for its elective conference. The first signs that the EFF leadership was under strain came earlier in the year when reports indicated that Shivambu would be challenged for his position by its secretary-general Marshall Dlamini. This revelation came after Malema recalled Shivambu from KwaZulu-Natal where his deputy had failed to retain its support. The recall of the-then deputy president signalled problems for the party. Shortly after the elections and Shivambu's defection, another loyal ally, Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, was suspected to be planning his exit. Ndlozi had been overlooked for several key positions within the party and relegated to the back of the leadership line. His influence over the student command resulted in public spats with some party members vowing to support him for the vacant deputy president position. Party members openly challenged Malema on social media platforms, which is uncharacteristic for the party. In an interview with the Sunday Times this week, Zuma said his plan was to take back the ANC by uniting black parties under his MK Party banner and recapturing the leadership of the party, which he said had deviated from its ancestors. He dismissed suggestions that the MK Party was poaching leaders from the EFF. “You can’t have everybody [joining] at one day, it will be something like a miracle. Other comrades come. Nobody is taking somebody [to move] from somebody else. All this time, before MK was established, people were moving from other parties to join others. This very same organisation you’re talking about, moved from this [ANC] organisation,” he told the Sunday Times. There wasn’t much that was aesthetically pleasing about watching Kenny Pickett play quarterback Sunday. He wears gloves, for one thing, because he finds that they’re more comfortable and help him better grip a football. But no quarterback who wears gloves appears as graceful and fluid throwing the ball as a quarterback who doesn’t wear them. What’s more, on every pass, whether it was a go route to DeVonta Smith or a screen to Saquon Barkley, Pickett seemed to be putting all his might into every throw. None of these observations meant that Pickett had a poor game in the Eagles’ 41-7 romp over the Cowboys, in the victory that clinched for them the NFC East title and at least the No. 2 seed in the conference playoff bracket. On the contrary, despite some skittish moments early on, Pickett was excellent: 10-for-15, 143 yards, one passing touchdown, one Tush Push touchdown. His style of play was reminiscent of a previous Eagles backup QB, Jeff Garcia, and his production was, too. Pickett left the game with just less than nine minutes remaining in the third quarter after taking a shot to his already-sore ribs from the Cowboys’ Micah Parsons. But then Tanner McKee stepped in for Pickett, tossed a touchdown to A.J. Brown on a beautiful back-shoulder throw, and the Eagles just rolled along. Hello, 13-3. Goodbye, any worries about Jalen Hurts’ absence. At least for the moment. And it might be only a moment. Had Hurts suffered a knee sprain or bruised shoulder last Sunday against the Washington Commanders, everyone would have a clearer sense of his immediate future. There would be a more reliable and defined timeline for his return. But he didn’t sprain his knee or bruise his shoulder. He was concussed, and though he wanted to get back into action immediately, there’s really no telling when he’ll be able to play again. He might pass the league-mandated protocol in the next few days and be ready to go for the postseason’s first round, in two weeks, or ... the Eagles’ medical staff might not clear him at all. Head trauma is that unpredictable, and it demands that much patience and care. With Hurts at full health, the Eagles are an obvious favorite to reach and, once there, win the Super Bowl. And in most such situations, when a quarterback who is that valuable to his team goes down, that team would be so crippled that it would no longer be considered a championship contender. Take Patrick Mahomes away from the Kansas City Chiefs or Josh Allen from the Buffalo Bills, of course, and those teams aren’t nearly so formidable, and the same principle applies to those QBs who are a tier below Mahomes and Allen: Jared Goff with the Detroit Lions, say, or Hurts with the Eagles. Even Sunday’s lopsided outcome at Lincoln Financial Field doesn’t necessarily mean the Eagles would be just hunky-dory in the playoffs if Hurts is still sidelined. The Cowboys didn’t have Dak Prescott or CeeDee Lamb or Trevon Diggs, and they weren’t exactly tearing up the NFL this season when those were healthy, anyway. Remember, though: The Eagles have a long history of surviving, even thriving, after losing their starting quarterback to injury. In 2002, Donovan McNabb broke his ankle, and the Eagles kept winning with Koy Detmer and A.J. Feeley. In 2006, Garcia filled in for McNabb and became a folk hero for his contributions to an out-of-nowhere run to a division title and the NFC divisional round. And no one around here needs reminding of what happened after Carson Wentz had his left knee torn up in early December 2017. That overwhelming doubt that usually accompanies seeing a star quarterback limp or stagger to the sideline? Yeah, Nick Foles caused a lot of it to evaporate forever. Those episodes don’t have much direct relevance to this particular Eagles team in this particular Eagles season. But they do serve as good reminders that whether Pickett or McKee or Ian Book turns out to be the one taking snaps in another meaningful game, there’s still a chance, maybe a good one, that this team — especially this team, with this collection of skill-position standouts, with this offensive line, with this defense — can withstand being without Hurts. The Eagles have been here before. These Eagles look like they can handle it. (Mike Sielski is a columnist for the The Philadelphia Inquirer .) ©2024 The Philadelphia Inquirer, LLC. Wild first season in expanded Big 12 comes down to final weekendPittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin took to the podium Tuesday to answer questions from local media and ended up defending his team from some criticisms. Although the loss to the Cleveland Browns came last Thursday, some reporters had more questions about George Pickens’ play, and his antics. The wide receiver and Browns cornerback Greg Newsome came into conflict both during and after the Hail Mary on the final play of the game when Pickens tossed Newsome by his facemask towards the stands. In the process, Pickens was taken out of the play. Tomlin avoided directly answering questions about the scuffle, sticking to football by reiterating that Pickens’ job was to high point the ball. When a reporter asked him if Pickens was in position to do his job, Tomlin replied, “I think [Cleveland’s] actions had something to do with him not being in position to do that,” according to Chris Adamski of TribLive.com . That is a reference to the actions of Newsome, who pushed Pickens out the back of the end zone while the ball was in mid-air, a move which Tomlin and Pickens both clearly think should have been pass interference. George Pickens and Greg Newsome on the final play of Steelers vs Browns pic.twitter.com/8N4vvU4wYj It appears the Steelers’ head coach has no problem with, or at least will not speak publicly on, the extracurricular activities of his star wideout this week in the mini-brawl with Newsome against he back wall behind the end zone. Tomlin went on to defend his team again in discussing a controversial third-down play call where Justin Fields came into the game. Fields has been primarily used as a runner lately, but threw a pass on Thursday for the first time since Russell Wilson took over the starting job. On that key third-down failure that prevented Pittsburgh from running out the clock, Fields took a three-step drop and delivered a decent impression of Wilson's now-famous "moonball" in the direction of Pickens, who was one-on-one on the outside. The pass ultimately fell incomplete and drew criticism considering the situation. The Steelers only needed four yards, so a deep ball wasn't an ideal play-call there. Furthermore, not having a superior passer in Wilson throw the ball was more reason to be frustrated over the play. George Pickens almost had a part 2 and look at this dime by Fields pic.twitter.com/YU14mKjSMJ Yet Mike Tomlin does not regret the play call or the personnel grouping. “We felt good about it, to be quite honest with you. It was a weighty moment. It was third-and-medium," Tomlin said, per ESPN's Brooke Pryor . "They had 11 guys within five yards of the line of scrimmage. We had GP matched up on a corner not named Denzel Ward. That feels like more than a 50-50 ball to me, and so we were comfortable with that decision.” Much of the Steelers’ biggest plays this season have come by hitting Pickens deep on go routes, especially with Russell Wilson at quarterback. As a result, teams are double-covering him more than ever. Arthur Smith drew up a play that got GP into the one-on-one situation that an elite jump-ball receiver lives for, and Fields delivered a great throw. The result of the play does not automatically condemn it as being a bad call, or even bad execution necessarily. Still, there are plenty of negatives to take away from a Thursday night upset where the first place Steelers lost to the last place team in the AFC North. Tomlin and Pittsburgh will have to right the ship as they travel to the opposite side of Ohio to play Cincinnati this coming Sunday at 1:00 pm EST. Wild first season in expanded Big 12 comes down to final weekend
NEW YORK (AP) — Top-ranked chess player Magnus Carlsen is headed back to the World Blitz Championship on Monday after its governing body agreed to loosen a dress code that got him fined and denied a late-round game in another tournament for refusing to change out of jeans . Lamenting the contretemps, International Chess Federation President Arkady Dvorkovich said in a statement Sunday that he'd let World Blitz Championship tournament officials consider allowing “appropriate jeans” with a jacket, and other “elegant minor deviations” from the dress code. He said Carlsen's stand — which culminated in his quitting the tournament Friday — highlighted a need for more discussion “to ensure that our rules and their application reflect the evolving nature of chess as a global and accessible sport.” Carlsen, meanwhile, said in a video posted Sunday on social media that he would play — and wear jeans — in the World Blitz Championship when it begins Monday. “I think the situation was badly mishandled on their side,” the 34-year-old Norwegian grandmaster said. But he added that he loves playing blitz — a fast-paced form of chess — and wanted fans to be able to watch, and that he was encouraged by his discussions with the federation after Friday's showdown. “I think we sort of all want the same thing,” he suggested in the video on his Take Take Take chess app’s YouTube channel. “We want the players to be comfortable, sure, but also relatively presentable.” The events began when Carlsen wore jeans and a sportcoat Friday to the Rapid World Championship, which is separate from but held in conjunction with the blitz event. The chess federation said Friday that longstanding rules prohibit jeans at those tournaments, and players are lodged nearby to make sartorial switch-ups easy if needed. An official fined Carlsen $200 and asked him to change pants, but he refused and wasn't paired for a ninth-round game, the federation said at the time. The organization noted that another grandmaster, Ian Nepomniachtchi, was fined earlier in the day for wearing sports shoes, changed and continued to play. Carlsen has said that he offered to wear something else the next day, but officials were unyielding. He said “it became a bit of a matter of principle,” so he quit the rapid and blitz championships. In the video posted Sunday, he questioned whether he had indeed broken a rule and said changing clothes would have needlessly interrupted his concentration between games. He called the punishment “unbelievably harsh.” “Of course, I could have changed. Obviously, I didn’t want to,” he said, and “I stand by that.”
Jimmy Carter: His life milestones and notable quotesJustice T. Vinod Kumar of Telangana High Court permitted a 17-year-old student to attend classes and appear for examinations at Nawab Shah Alam Khan College of Engineering and Technology, despite alleged illegal rejection of his admission under the TS-Polycet 2023 spot admission category. The judge took on file a writ plea filed by the father of the student, who challenged the rejection of his admission to the Diploma in Polytechnic course for the academic year 2023-24. The petitioner argued that despite he being eligible, the rejection by the convenor, TS-Polycet admissions, was arbitrary. The petitioner sought a directive to ratify and approve his admission under the spot admission category, declaring it valid for all purposes. Earlier, in similar matter, the judge ordered the respondents, including the higher education department and the State Board of Technical Education, to allow the petitioner to attend classes, receive hall tickets, and participate in examinations. The judge clarified that students admitted from outside Telangana would proceed at their own risk and would not be entitled to claim any equities. The judge ordered notices to Nawab Shah Alam Khan College of Engineering and Technology and posted the matter for further hearing in three weeks. Justice G. Radha Rani granted regular bail to an accused allegedly involved in selling ganja. The judge was dealing with a bail petition filed by Laddu Singh Balbeer Singh Chita, a mechanic. The case of the prosecution was that, on the prohibition and excise department, Dhoolpet, raided the house premises of two accused and found 22.922 kgs of dry ganja. Upon inquiry, the two accused confessed that they were involved in stocking of ganja at the instance of the petitioner. Basing on the confession of the co-accused, the petitioner was arrested and produced on PT warrant. The petitioner contended that he was no way connected with the alleged offences and was in judicial custody in a different crime. The petitioner stated that he had no knowledge about the present offence and drew attention of the judge to the settled principal of law which provides that extra-judicial confession is a weak piece of evidence. The additional public prosecutor opposed bail, contending that the petitioner was a prime accused who stocked the ganja. The APP argued that the petitioner was implicating the other accused. The judge observed that except the confession of the co-accused, there was no other admissible evidence collected by the investigating officer against the petitioner. Therefore, the judge deemed that it was a fit case for grant of conditional bail. The Telangana High Court will hear a writ plea filed by the owner of a lodge seized by the Macherial revenue divisional officer cum sub-divisional magistrate (RDO) for allegedly carrying out anti-social activities. Justice B. Vijaysen Reddy was dealing a writ plea filed by Enugu Narayana, challenging the actions of the RDO in issuing proceedings and passing a seizing order against Venkateshwara Super Deluxe Lodge of the petitioner, situated at Mancherial. It was the case of the petitioner that the seizure of petitioner’s premises was without issuing notice and following the due process of law. The petitioner also alleged that no opportunity to make an explanation as per the provisions of the Immoral Traffic Act Prevention Act was given. The judge directed counsel representing state to obtain instructions.
