ROME — Members of the Drone Clubs at both Bellamy and Gansevoort elementary schools will now be able to experience even more flight time, thanks to the delivery of six new DJI Tello Drones from the Griffiss Institute and the Rome Community Foundation. The Bellamy club members were visited in their gymnasium Wednesday by Griffiss Institute Chief Talent Officer Todd Humiston, Talent Division Program Analyst Makenzi Enos, Director of Strategic Program Pursuits and Launches Jennifer Marshall and Digital Marketing Associate Corrine Bush and Rome Community Foundation Board of Directors member Frank Di Berardino. They came bearing the gifts of the drones — a donation funded through a grant from the Rome Community Foundation. “With everything about drones going on in the news right now, this is the perfect time to do this,” Di Berardino said. “I think that exposing the kids to this kind of technology will be helpful to them as they grow. Many of them may even end up in technology fields themselves. These kids are the perfect age right now to absorb and learn.” The Drone Clubs are led by Darlene Plumb and Rochelle Fazekas, the PC specialists at the Bellamy and Gansevoort schools, respectively. The first drones arrived in the district in 2019, Plumb recalled. The clubs meet once a week for an hour after school. There are currently 10 fifth and sixth grade students in the Bellamy club. Fazekas said the Gansevoort club will resume in mid-January for fifth graders. The six new drones bring their shared squadron up to 12. That’s enough drones for every student currently enrolled in the program to all have hands-on experience with the technology, Plumb said. But the Drone Clubs are not solely about the fun of flying, although that is likely the kids’ favorite part. Plumb said while they do have the ability to fly them manually, instead the students are told to program them using block coding. That technique entails taking “blocks” of codes — with individual commands in those blocks calling for the drones to rise, lower, turn or fly ahead for different distances — and then dragging and inserting them into the sequence of the flight plan. “I like being able to program them,” said Bellamy fifth grader Sabian Yin. And in addition to actually flying the drones, the students also have simulators on their Chromebooks to practice their skills. The club also teaches them important information about flying drones, like how they cannot fly in a no-fly zone like the one located nearby at the Oneida County Airport. The guests watched as the students programmed their new drones to fly through hoops set up on the gym floor. Some of the drones flew through the targets, others needed a tweak or two to the program. Drones sometimes crashed to the floor but were quickly reassembled and back in the air. Humiston said the gift of the drones might inspire the technicians of tomorrow. “This is not just about gaining experience flying drones but also gaining experience in writing code in blocks,” he said. “This gives them an introduction to programming. This might spark the interest and light the fire that will inspire them to pursue that interest in STEM as they go through school.”
The New York City Council introduced Bill LS 17648 today that calls for a feasibility study of zero-emission port operations by 2040 that includes all aspects of port transportation, maintenance, loading and unloading, ocean-going vessels, handling equipment, trucks and locomotives. The feasibility study would be delivered one year from enactment. Councilmembers Alexa Avilés and Shana K. Hanif are leading the bill’s introduction. “I’m proud to introduce this legislation, alongside impactful partners such as Pacific Environment, to plan for a sustainable future in New York,” said Council Member Alexa Avilés (New York City Council District 38). “Conducting a feasibility study regarding the transition of our city’s ports to zero-emissions by 2040 is an important step forward for our climate future and one we need to consider urgently, especially as we consider a revisioning process at the Brooklyn Marine Terminal in an age of climate collapse. Let’s start this process and usher in a new era of sustainable waterfront industries in New York.” The international maritime shipping sector is a huge polluter. If shipping were a country, it would be the sixth largest polluter in the world, emitting 1 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide into our atmosphere annually. Fossil-fueled ports and ships also significantly impact the health of portside communities. Across the New York metro region, air pollution is estimated to cause over 21,000 cases of childhood asthma each year. “Port cities like Los Angeles, Long Beach and Seattle have helped catalyze the transition to a cleaner ocean shipping industry, and New York has a crucial role to play as well. With federal climate action going to be stymied in the next four years, it is more important than ever for local governments to carry the torch forward on the Biden-Harris Administration’s climate progress,” said Dawny’all Heydari, Climate Campaign Advocate, Pacific Environment. “By introducing the call for a comprehensive feasibility study of zero-emission port operations by 2040 with Bill LS 17648, the New York City Council is addressing a critical need to modernize port activity while protecting New Yorkers’ health and combating climate change in a timely way.” If the bill passes, the resulting feasibility study would: Evaluate the readiness of city ports to transition to zero-emission port operations; Identify whether a transition to zero-emission port operations can be completed by 2040; Evaluate the technology available to assist in this transition; Evaluate the investments needed to achieve this transition; Evaluate whether the port operations workforce is prepared to make this transition, and if not, whether training programs can be made available to the workforce; Evaluate whether it is practicable to provide incentives, such as reduced docking fees or docking order benefits, to zero-emission commercial marine vessels or commercial marine vessels that have significantly reduced emissions of greenhouse gases and criteria air pollutants; Evaluate whether it is possible for sufficient shore power to be provided to all commercial marine vessels by 2027; and Identify any barriers to achieving sufficient shore power to all commercial marine vessels by 2027. “The introduction of this bill represents a pivotal opportunity to study the potential for zero-emission solutions across ocean-going vessels, handling equipment, trucks, and locomotives. MIAMI GARDENS — Miami Dolphins second-year running back De’Von Achane continues to be one of the NFL’s most electric, exciting players to watch. And better yet, he is seen with the ball in his hands more and more as he handles his increased workload in Year 2 without issue. Achane has stormed past last year’s total touches, 168 in 10 games this year after having 130 in 11 games in 2023. He surpassed his rookie-year carry total two games ago — now at 122 after having 103 attempts last season. And after catching 27 passes last year, his 46 thus far as a second-year pro have him within reach of doubling that mark by Sunday’s game against the New England Patriots . The best part about it all, as Achane has been productive at 4.3 yards per carry along with being more active catching passes, is he hasn’t brushed up with any injury concerns. This after the 5-foot-9, 188-pound speedster had a pair of knee issues in 2023, one which placed him on injured reserve to miss four games. “I feel good,” Achane said this week. “I’m just glad I’m 100 percent healthy. I didn’t have any injuries like I did last season, so I’m just trying to keep that up, just make sure my body is maintained for the rest of the season.” The concussion that took him out early in the first meeting with the Patriots, Oct. 6 in Foxborough, Massachusetts, didn’t even cost him the next game as he recovered over the bye week. He did return to action with a Guardian cap over his helmet, but Sunday’s game against the Las Vegas Raiders was the first one he played without it. In that 34-19 win against the Raiders , he had 17 carries for 73 yards and a touchdown, adding four catches for 32 yards. He had 21 touches, while rookie Jaylen Wright had six and veteran Raheem Mostert had three. Related Articles Coach Mike McDaniel went into the game expecting to distribute opportunities more among his three running backs, but Achane’s productivity again couldn’t be kept off the field. “De’Von’s play merited some extra snaps that we were kind of anticipating being a little more level,” he said. “He was really playing well, so in those situations we kind of lean on the hot hand, so to speak, and I think he’s really made it difficult in in-game situations, the last two in particular, to take him off the field. But we try to leave that room for guys to decide for us during the game on how much play time they’ll get and respond appropriately.” Achane hasn’t broken off as many long runs that led to his absurd modern-era record of 7.8 yards per attempt as a rookie, but McDaniel noted how Achane has been more consistent in the run game, turning plays that could go for loss of yards into significant gains. Catching passes was an emphasis for Achane this offseason, and he has a reception on all but five of his targets this season as he has become a go-to for quarterback Tua Tagovailoa while defenses focus in so much on wide receivers Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle. So, excited for everything he’s done.” Then, there’s the other side of Achane’s uptick in work. The other half of last year’s backfield duo, Mostert, isn’t seeing nearly as much action. “He’s doing a good job,” Mostert said of Achane. “He’s hot right now, and it’s good to see. He’s very impressive. “I’ve dealt with a lot, but I’m here to play a role. And that’s just to get myself better, get everybody else around me better. If my opportunity knocks, I just got to answer the door.” Mostert recently had a sit-down with McDaniel, with whom he goes back to time together in San Francisco, before either of them arrived in Miami. “We just try to see eye to eye. That’s the best thing we can do,” Mostert said. “We had a good conversation, and we see eye to eye now. Moving forward, I told him, he can always come to me, and I’m going to come to (him), as well. We have a lot in common, and a lot of things that we discussed.
