(AP) — Service workers at Charlotte Douglas International Airport filled out paper ballots on a busy Friday before Thanksgiving to decide whether to go on a 24-hour strike during the holidays. The vote is being taken by employees of ABM and Prospect Airport Services, which provide services like cleaning interiors of the planes, removing trash and escorting passengers in wheelchairs. Charlotte Douglas International Airport said in a news release they were expecting approximately 1.02 million passengers departing between the Thursday and Monday before the holiday. The exact date of the proposed strike has not been announced. Dorothy Griffin has been working for ABM for seven years and said she provides equipment for people to clean the cabins of planes between flights. “We’re voting on our strike because we’re not treated fairly, we’re not paid fairly,” said Griffin. “We’re not respected in our jobs. We just want higher and more wages and a little respect.” Griffin said the workers have long complained about the working conditions, saying they don’t always have access to drinking water. Griffin said her wages are so low that she doesn’t have money to pay for repairs to her car. “If we stop working, the airport is going to stop. The planes can’t go,” Griffin said. ABM issued a statement saying that it would take steps to minimize disruptions from any demonstrations. “At ABM, we appreciate the hard work our team members put in every day to support our clients and help keep spaces clean and people healthy,” the company said in a statement provided to The Associated Press. “We are aware of the planned demonstration over the busy holiday travel season and are taking steps to minimize any potential service disruption.” Suzanne Mucklow, a representative for Prospect Airport Services, said in a statement to the AP that they recognize the seriousness of the potential for a strike during the busy holiday travel season. “Prospect Airport Services is proud to provide higher wages, experienced leadership, and comprehensive benefits to all our employees, including the dedicated team members working at Charlotte Douglas International Airport,” Mucklow said. “We prioritize consistent and transparent communication with all our employees, ensuring they receive fair compensation and robust career advancement opportunities. Lashonda Barber, who also works for ABM as a trash truck driver, said that company’s employees have been asking to be unionized and don’t get paid sick or vacation time. “This is very important and the strike vote will hopefully make a difference,” said Barber. She said the decision to vote to strike for 24 hours was not an easy one for her financially. Winnipeg Jets Game Days On Winnipeg Jets game days, hockey writers Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe send news, notes and quotes from the morning skate, as well as injury updates and lineup decisions. Arrives a few hours prior to puck drop. “To lose a day of work, it’s going to hurt us in the long run,” Barber said. Nemiah Sydney, of Atlanta, was traveling through the airport on Friday and said he supported the workers voting to strike, although he hoped it would not affect his travel plans. “They got families they got to take care of. They gotta fight for a better wage,” Sydney said, calling them the essential workers of the airports. __ Associated Press reporter Kristin M. Hall in Nashville, Tennessee contributed to this report. NoneOTTAWA — Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown said foreign interference did not tip the scales in the Conservative party’s last leadership race that installed Pierre Poilievre at the helm. But he offered up Thursday that he changed some of the language he was using after getting pushback from an Indian diplomat that some of his comments could sound like he was endorsing ideas of Sikh nationalism. Brown, who was a candidate for the leadership in 2022, was summoned to a House of Commons committee Thursday to answer questions on the 2022 race after a report from a committee on national security referred to allegations of Indian interference in an unspecified Conservative leadership campaign. “I don’t believe foreign intervention affected the final outcome of the Conservative leadership race,” Brown told the House of Commons public safety and national security committee Thursday. A CBC/Radio-Canada article this week quoted several confidential sources from Brown’s campaign alleging that representatives from India’s consulate interfered to undermine his leadership bid. On Monday, Brown posted on social media about the committee’s summons to say that he had no new evidence to add, and that the public inquiry on foreign interference was the proper venue to evaluate the allegations. Brown insisted to the committee Thursday that no members of the Indian government reached out to him or his campaign workers during his leadership bid, saying the relationship was “already very strained” at that point. The CBC News story also contained allegations that his national campaign co-chair Conservative MP Michelle Rempel Garner was pressured to withdraw her support for Brown — something she denied. When NDP MP Alistair MacGregor quizzed him on the news report, asking why she left the campaign, Brown said she left seeking to launch her own leadership bid to replace UCP leader Jason Kenney in Alberta — not from pressure from India. “At no time when we talked about her departing the campaign did she ever say it was over pressure from the consul general,” he said. He said the article likely referred to a conference call more than a month before she left, after the consul general raised concerns with Rempel Garner about Brown using the words “Sikh nation.” “The consul general had expressed directly to (Rempel Garner) that, obviously that was something they didn’t agree with, that it could be viewed in nationalistic terms towards the Sikh community,” he said. That led him to change the language he was employing to a Punjabi term that he said meant the same thing. Liberal MP Jennifer O’Connell asked if that’s “an appropriate election activity by a foreign government,” charging it was a clear instance of foreign interference. Brown replied that Indian officials “have been more robust in their opinions than some of us would be comfortable with.” A bombshell report by the National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians into foreign interference released last spring referred to “India’s alleged interference in a Conservative Party of Canada leadership race.” Brown said he was not under any kind of non-disclosure agreement with the Conservative Party that prevents him from speaking publicly about what happened during the race. He said he believes it’s important to guard against foreign meddling in democracy but that he does not want to get drawn into partisan debates on Parliament Hill. Brown was not included as a witness in the public inquiry into foreign interference, which wrapped up hearings earlier this fall with a final report due in the new year. He was disqualified from the party’s 2022 leadership race due to allegations related to financing rules in the Canada Elections Act. HORRIFYING video shows the moment a huge fireball sent pedestrians running for their lives on a busy street. Shocking CCTV footage shows flames burning fiercely just yards from unsuspecting passers-by. The huge blast in Brooklyn, New York is believed to have been sparked by a gas leak. Before anyone has time to react, the fireball grows so large that the whole of the frame turns white from the hot glow. The fire can be seen burning several stories high while people turn and run from the scene. Eventually, the blaze dies down and a plume of thick, black smoke can be seen rising into the air. READ MORE The blast happened on the evening of Wednesday, December 11. The U.S. Sun has approached the New York City Fire Department for comment. It comes after a power failure in Downtown Brooklyn left thousands of subway riders stranded underground during the Wednesday evening rush hour. Power was lost just before 5:30 pm between Jay Street/MetroTech and Hoyt-Schermerhorn stations, causing disruption to four separate subway lines. Most read in The US Sun The A, C, F, and G lines all lost power or had to be rerouted. Some 3,500 riders were on two F trains that lost power and had to be evacuated. ConEdison did not immediately respond to The U.S. Sun's request for confirmation that the explosion was linked to Wednesday night's subway disruption. Stranded riders were forced to pee between the cars as they waited to be rescued. Cookies were passed around to some of the affected passengers. Some were trapped underground for up to two hours. BALTIMORE — Maryland lawmakers tasked with resolving a daunting multibillion-dollar budget deficit in the coming months will enter those negotiations without any last-minute curveballs — at least on one side of the equation. The state is on track to collect about the same as previously expected — north of $25 billion — in taxes and other revenues in the current 2025 fiscal year and the next one that begins July 1, the Maryland Board of Revenue Estimates said Thursday. The update doesn’t change the dynamics ahead for Gov. Wes Moore and members of the Maryland General Assembly, who are wrestling with the largest budget hole in recent memory and the worst five-year outlook in two decades. But it’s also not the whole picture. Comptroller Brooke Lierman, who chairs the three-member revenue board, warned that the incoming Donald Trump administration could significantly increase the state’s financial pressures if the president-elect and his allies follow through on promises like reducing large portions of the federal workforce , which makes up 5.9% of Maryland jobs and almost 10% of wages. Maryland relies heavily on federal jobs and contracts compared to other states because of its proximity to Washington, D.C., and its role as the home of agencies like the Social Security Administration and the National Institutes of Health. Elon Musk, the world’s richest person, and former presidential candidate Vivek Ramaswamy are aiming to slash the number of federal jobs , and government spending generally, through a new Department of Government Efficiency that Trump tapped them to lead. Major cuts could mean a hit to a key portion of the state’s tax base. “States across the country have different industries that they rely on. Texas has oil and gas; we have the federal government,” Lierman said. She added that the state needed a more robust private sector in order to be less dependent on federal jobs. Tough choices are ahead either way. The 2026 fiscal year budget, which the governor and legislature will craft during the annual 90-day session that begins Jan. 8, has a projected $2.7 billion deficit. Moore has preferred to cut from existing programs and use temporary revenue measures during his first two years in office, but the worsening picture is expected to ignite more robust discussions about both cuts and tax increases. Slow growth in the private sector and the uncertainty at the federal level are creating a hazy outlook for revenues ahead, though. “The risks ahead for Maryland’s economy during this period of federal transition overshadow what might otherwise be some reason for guarded optimism,” Secretary of Budget and Management Helene Grady said. Moore must present his budget proposal to lawmakers by Jan. 15. That will kick off months of negotiations between Democrats who control a supermajority of the legislature and will amend the governor’s plan through early April. House and Senate leaders clashed earlier this year over whether to raise money through ideas like higher corporate income taxes or legalizing online gambling – though Senate President Bill Ferguson, a Democrat who opposed such efforts, has recently said “everything is on the table” this time around. Onetime fixes, sluggish economic growth and increasing expenses have driven the dimming budget outlook. The governor’s office is also evaluating the potential impact of the transition to Trump. Beyond the workforce and federal contracting issues, the state receives about $20 billion in federal revenue annually, which is roughly a third of the state budget. Billions of dollars in other funding the state is hoping to collect for future projects like the Red Line light rail project in Baltimore are also up in the air. Before Thursday’s meeting, the Board of Revenue Estimates last revealed a “modest” increase in anticipated revenue in September. The roughly $88 million bump in the current 2025 fiscal year was a reversal after five consecutive meetings of the board in which expectations were downgraded. The latest update is another positive sign, though officials remained guarded in their outlook. “Compared to prior times, it is less well equipped,” BRE Executive Secretary Robert Rehrmann said of Maryland’s economic ability “to absorb a potential negative impact from the federal government.” The state is anticipating $25.3 billion in revenue in the 2025 fiscal year, an increase of 1.6%, and $25.4 billion in 2026, a roughly 0.4% increase that officials have described as slow. That funding comes mainly from personal income taxes, corporate and sales taxes and lottery revenues. Lawmakers have so far focused primarily on higher corporate taxes and personal income taxes for the biggest earners in discussions about where to find new revenue, though some have also talked about changing the state’s 6% sales tax. Moore has said only that he has a “high bar” for new taxes and will maintain that thinking throughout his time in office. The Spending Affordability Committee, a legislative group that sets the budget deficit projections, is scheduled to meet Tuesday to finalize the parameters for the upcoming budget talks with Thursday’s new revenue numbers. The revenue board, meanwhile, will meet again in March, when lawmakers can make mid-session adjustments as they continue to negotiate over the budget. “I am optimistic about Maryland’s economy and the resilience of our economy,” Lierman said. ©2024 Baltimore Sun. In a lengthy speech at the Brookings Institution, a Washington, D.C. think tank, on Tuesday, President Joe Biden forcefully defended his economic legacy and harshly criticized his successor. “Most economists agree the new administration is going to inherit a fairly strong economy, at least at the moment, an economy going through fundamental transformation,” Biden said. “It is my profound hope that the new administration will preserve and build on this progress. Like most great economic developments, this one is neither red nor blue, and America's progress is everyone's progress.” RELATED STORY | What impacts will a Trump presidency have on the economy? The president pointed specifically to record job growth during his tenure and an historically-low unemployment rate, as well as solid GDP performance, major investments in infrastructure and a soaring stock market. Most economists agree Biden’s term in office has coincided with a strong jobs market, and note the economic forecast remains bright – especially when contrasted to that of other peer nations, many of which have struggled to rebound from the COVID-19 pandemic. And yet, Americans by and large disapprove of Biden’s economic tenure, particularly the high costs of goods and services. Though inflation has fallen some, it remains higher than when the president took office and has become a frequent point of attack for Republicans critical of the Biden administration. RELATED STORY | Wealthier Americans are driving retail spending and powering US economy President-elect Donald Trump’s victory last month served in some was as a repudiation of the president’s so-called “Bidenomics” policies, with most voters telling pollsters they were dissatisfied with the state of the U.S. economy and Biden’s handling of the issue. Since Trump’s election, attitudes towards the economy have improved slightly, particularly among Republicans; according to research from Gallup, just eight percent of Republicans in October viewed economic conditions as getting better, compared to 30% last month. Biden himself seemed to acknowledge some missteps in selling his economic vision to Americans. “I also learned something from Donald Trump,” Biden said. “He signed checks for people for $7,400 bucks,” the president noted of the pandemic-era relief measures. Even though Biden approved similar relief efforts during his term, his name never appeared on American’s checks. “I didn't – stupid,” Biden conceded. RELATED STORY | Powell says Fed will likely cut rates cautiously given persistent inflation pressures Seeking to bolster Biden’s economic legacy, the White House on Tuesday launched a new website hailing the “Biden Economy,” featuring statistics about economic performance during his term and complimentary videos from his supporters. Biden’s speach, meanwhile, also served as a warning of sorts to his successor, with the president arguing against tax cuts for the wealthy and the notion that such benefits would “trickle down” to middle class Americans. “You can make as much money as you can, good for you, but everybody's got to be they pay their fair share,” Biden said. Trump has pledged to extend the tax cuts he signed into law in 2017, telling NBC News he intends to submit a tax package to Congress within his first 100 days in office. “They’re coming due and they’re very substantial for people,” Trump said of his 2017 cuts. “That’s what led us to one of the greatest economies ever.” RELATED STORY | Amid corporate layoffs, 36% of workforce turns to gig economy for alternative employment A report by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office in December found that failing to extend those tax incentives would have a negligible impact on the economy, though Republicans are expected to pursue them and other business tax breaks after they retake both chambers of Congress next year. Trump has also promised to impose significant tariffs on the import of foreign goods from Mexico, Canada and China – despite economists’ and retailers’ warnings that will drive up consumer prices. Trump in the NBC interview said he couldn’t guarantee the move wouldn’t increase consumer costs, something Biden harshly refuted. “I believe we've proven that approach is a mistake over the past four years,” Biden said. “But we all know in time, we all know in time what will happen.”
