Led by a dynamic one-two punch, the Vernon (VSS) Panthers girls basketball team booked their spot in the annual Tsumura Basketball Invitational (TBI) quarterfinals. The TBI, hosted in Langley, features 64 of the best teams across B.C., split into two 16-team brackets. VSS was drawn against the Brittania Bruins from Vancouver in the opener in the Select 16 bracket. After a back-and-forth battle, the Panthers eked out a 67-58 victory. Leading the way for the Panthers was the Grade 11 duo of Adie Janke and Chloe Collins, who combined for 43 of the team's 67 points. Janke's 23 points came off of three triples and numerous clutch buckets in the late fourth quarter as the Panthers clawed their way back down 56-53 with four minutes to go. Through six games so far this year, the Panthers are without a loss. They will look to continue that streak on Thursday, when they play the South Delta Sun Devils in the quarterfinals after the Sun Devils won, 84-58, over the Centennial Centaurs from Coquitlam. Two other Okanagan teams are playing in the tournament, the Okanagan Mission (OKM) Huskies and the Kelowna Secondary School Owls, competing in the Super 16 bracket. The ILA and the United States Maritime Alliance (USMX) employer group are facing a Jan. 15 deadline to finalize talks, which stalled over cargo-handling automation. That deadline comes just five days before Trump's inauguration. The ILA says automation kills jobs while employers say it is necessary to keep U.S. ports competitive in a rapidly changing global economy. "The amount of money saved is nowhere near the distress, hurt, and harm it causes for American Workers, in this case, our Longshoremen," Trump said of automation projects in a post on Truth Social. That message followed a meeting with Harold Daggett, who leads the International Longshoremen's Association union that represents the port workers, Trump said. The two sides agreed to end a three-day strike on Oct. 3 after the union won a 62% wage hike over six years with significant involvement by the White House and other officials from President Joe Biden's administration. Employers, which include the U.S. operations of Switzerland's Mediterranean Shipping Company, Denmark's Maersk and China's COSCO Shipping, have been booking record profits in part due to access to U.S. markets, Trump said on Thursday. Ahead of Black Friday, Cyber Monday, and the Holiday Season, PYMNTS took a look at how the loyalty industry is changing due to the integration of blockchain technology .North Carolina could overhaul how language arts is taught in what’s being billed as a better way to teach students how to become successful readers. The state Department of Public Instruction recently released for public comment the first draft of new K-12 English/language arts standards. It includes what DPI says are a number of major changes, including reducing how many standards are taught and revising English IV offerings for high school seniors. “These are pretty major changes and there could be some major impacts across the state,” said Kristi Day, director of DPI’s Office of Academic Standards. “When those surveys go out today or tomorrow, we really want to hear from the field because we want to know how does this impact them? How does this impact their students and their teaching?” DPI staff briefed the State Board of Education on the proposed new standards this week. The standards will go through at least two more drafts before being voted on next year by the state board. School districts set their own curriculum based on the standards adopted by the state. This will be the first major revision since the current language arts standards were adopted in 2017. The current standards replaced the controversial Common Core-based standards. Here’s a look at some of the major changes in the proposed standards: In what Day told the state board was a “mic drop” she said the number of standards would be cut in half. Standards are defined by DPI as “what is it that students need to know and be able to do.” For instance, kindergarten and first grade currently have a combined 139 standards students are expected to learn. It would drop to 79 in the new draft. Language arts teachers are currently expected to teach a total of 205 standards in grades 6 through 8. But the new draft only has 69 standards for middle school. Also as part of the shift, there will no longer be standards for each individual grade level. Instead, standards are proposed to be grouped by “grade bands” with multiple grades: K-1, 2-3, 4-5, 6-8, 9-11 and 12th grade. The reduction in standards is part of what DPI said staff was their effort to reimagine how language arts is taught. DPI says the changes align with the phonics-based “science of reading” training that the state’s elementary school teachers have been taught to use. Day repeatedly told state board members they’re not lowering expectations for students. Instead, she said teachers would now be able to go into more detail covering each standard. “I want to be very clear it’s not a watering down of standards,” Day said. “We’re not reducing to reduce. “We really looked at how to integrate and how to bring those standards to a place where teachers could do more with less and they could have deeper conversations, deeper tasks, thoughtful types of assignments so they can really dive in deeper so they can master these standards across more than just one year.” For instance one of the proposed K-1 standards is to “determine the central message, lesson, and main topic of texts using key details.” Students would now be expected to be taught that standard in both grade levels. It’s part of a teaching method called “spiraling.” Teachers across the different grade levels in each band would revisit topics multiple times to build on what students previously learned about the standard. DPI staff gave multiple examples to the state board of why they said the current standards need to be changed. DPI provides teachers with pacing guides. But it’s become “death by pacing guides” as teachers rush to cover all the standards, according to Amy Rhyne, senior director of DPI’s Office of Early Learning. “That really drives the rush, if you will, of what’s happening around mastery and what it looks like,” Rhyne told the state board. “That competes with our overarching goal of what does it look like for a student to be a successful long-term reader rather than teaching the minimal pieces to a test.” Rhyne compared it to expecting someone to know how to ride a bicycle by having them spend three days holding the handle bars, four days practicing balancing and five days of practicing pedaling in place. “We have to rethink and redesign what that looks like, which is where we’re working together on how to be more innovative and think differently about how we are teaching children to read rather than checking off skills and standards,” Rhyne told the state board. Students must complete four English courses to graduate from high school. But DPI staff said the options for seniors are limited in English IV, which is a traditional literature course that might not appeal to all students. “Why not think of a different option for English IV?” said Sneha Shah Coltrane, DPI’s senior director of Advanced Learning and Gifted Education. “We know that is not going to be an easy shift. But in all the other content areas, we have significant choices. “A child can take Excel instead of Math IV. In science, they have so many options, in social studies so many options. But we don’t when it comes to senior English.” What’s proposed in the new standards is offering three different English IV sections: STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), arts and literature. The current English IV course would be retained as the literature section. Shah Coltrane said that offering different types of English IV courses could make them more relevant to seniors and decrease absenteeism. ”Our initial feedback has been very positive, but it as well has been very scary for some teachers,” Shah Coltrane told the state board. ©2024 The Charlotte Observer. It’s all in God’s timing.” His close friend and fellow Browns receiver Elijah Moore knows it was a long time coming. The two go all the way back to their youth 7-on-7 days back in South Florida with the Florida Fire, and Moore hated watching Jeudy languish in Denver. “We used to talk about it when we were playing 7-on-7,” he said. “This is what we always wanted. For any receiver, their own personal dream is to get 1,000 yards. In fact, if the Chiefs put the clamps on him Sunday the way they have in his first eight meetings against them, during which he went 1-7, he might not reach 1,000 on Sunday. In his eight games vs. them, Jeudy has caught 29 of 47 targets for 307 yards — an average of only 38.4 yards per game. But that’s before he became the valued No. 1 receiver he is with the Browns, and before he linked up with the cannon-armed Winston, who’s slinging it down the field to him early and often. This season, Jeudy is averaging 72.6 yards game, but with Winston, it’s 113. Over his last six games with Winston, he’s caught 38 of 55 attempts for 678 yards, with three TDs and a 17.84 per catch average. Included was his career-high 235-yard game against the Broncos, the most by a receiver against his former team in NFL history. It’s a distinction that’s extremely important to him. “Yeah, I mean I look at myself as a wide receiver one and I feel like I deserve that respect in the league,” he said. If he couldn’t reach his goal of the playoffs and a Super Bowl this year with the 3-10 Browns, the chance to plant his flag in the NFL has been a nice consolation prize. “Oh yeah, for sure,” he said. “For sure. I feel like we didn’t have the season that we want as a team, that’s the most important part and it’s kind of tough, but having a thousand yards, that’s a great feeling because like I said, all the great receivers reached the thousand-yard limit and I feel like I’m one receiver that could consistently do that.” In addition, Jeudy hopes to make the Pro Bowl this season, and posted a praying hands emoji reply to the Browns’ Pro Bowl voting graphic on social media. “Oh yeah, for sure, for sure,” he said. “Pro Bowl, you’re considered one of the top players if you reach that. So I pride myself on becoming one of the top players and I’m going to work towards that every year.” Jeudy will have his work cut out against the Chiefs corners, who know him well and will try to get their hands on him. “They’ve got great corners,” he said. “They play well together. They communicate well together. Us as a receiver group, I feel like we do a great job of beating press man, which they do a great job of. I think they’re the No. 1 team that do press man. So I feel like we got a great group of receivers that know how to beat press man and know how to get open to do that.” With David Njoku likely sitting out this game because of his hamstring injury, the Chiefs will pay even more attention to Jeudy. “You can put attention on me if you want, but we got other guys that can make plays too as well,” he said. “So the more attention on me, the more open other players going to get. So as long as you put up points and win the game, that’s all that matters.” But Cedric Tillman should be back from his concussion, and that will help. “He’s going to open up the passing game tremendously,” Jeudy said. “Having Ced back, that’s just another offensive weapon that we can use to the game plan. He’s been balling the last few games before he got hurt, so having him back really going to take a lot of attention off of me and keep them true to their coverage.” Jeudy, who can play all over the field, has been play-calling gold for offensive coordinator Ken Dorsey. “His mind for the game and his intelligence, his ability to move into different spots, whether it’s inside, outside, X, Z, whatever it is definitely beneficial,” Dorsey said. “You want to be able to move guys around so a defense can’t get a beat on them and know exactly where they’re lining up every time. His mental ability to handle that and then the physical ability to run the routes and still be able to win is a huge advantage.” And now, Jeudy will finally have 1,000 yards to show for it, as soon as Sunday.
