MIAMI — Traffic citations issued to Miami Dolphins star wide receiver Tyreek Hill after a September altercation with police have been dismissed after the charging officers didn’t attend a court hearing. Hill’s tickets for careless driving and failing to wear a seat belt were dismissed after the Miami-Dade Police officers failed to show up for a Monday hearing. The tickets were issued after Hill was stopped outside Hard Rock Stadium for allegedly speeding before the Dolphins’ season opener on Sept. 8. The stop escalated and an officer pulled Hill from the car, forced him to the ground and handcuffed him. Hill said in a Tuesday post on the social platform X , “Where all the internet cops now”. The Miami-Dade Police said the officers’ failure to appear was “an oversight” and “the matter will be handled administratively.” Still, the department defended issuing Hill the tickets. “A citation dismissed due to this reason does not indicate that the citation held no merit,” the agency said in a statement. Police body camera video from the September stop showed Hill appeared to speed past two motorcycle officers who were monitoring traffic on a road outside the stadium. They pulled over his McLaren sports car and one tapped on his window. Hill, 30, handed the officer his driver’s license, but told the officer repeatedly, “Don’t knock on my window like that.” He then put his window back up. Their verbal exchange escalated and the officers soon pulled him from the car, forcing Hill face-first to the ground. The officers cursed at Hill but he did not resist their physical force or strike at them in the video. He did tell one officer, “Don’t tell me what to do.” Hill was eventually stood up, but then an officer dragged him into a sitting position on the curb after he said a knee injury made that difficult. After about 30 minutes, Hill was issued citations and allowed to enter the stadium. One officer was placed on administrative duty and an internal affairs investigation was launched. No results have been released.Incoming President Donald Trump is tapping another Bay Area Republican for a spot in his administration, announcing Monday that he’s nominating the San Francisco legal warrior Harmeet Dhillon for assistant attorney general for civil rights in the U.S. Department of Justice. Dhillon, 56, is a lawyer and Fox News commentator who worked on Trump’s 2020 campaign and Kari Lake’s 2022 bid for governor in Arizona. She also founded a private law practice and a conservative legal nonprofit that challenged Gov. Gavin Newsom’s shutdown orders during the pandemic and represented a formerly transgender activist. In his announcement Monday on Truth Social, Trump praised Dhillon for her efforts “to protect our cherished Civil Liberties” and challenging “woke policies.” “In her new role at the DOJ, Harmeet will be a tireless defender of our Constitutional Rights, and will enforce our Civil Rights and Election Laws FAIRLY and FIRMLY,” Trump said. Dhillon is the latest of several Bay Area figures Trump has tapped for his second administration, joining tech investor David Sacks, Stanford University health policy professor Dr. Jay Bhattacharya and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who also owns the former Twitter social media platform X, founded SpaceX and cofounded Neuralink. Dhillon declined to comment for this story, said spokesperson and GOP strategist Matt Shupe. “I’m extremely honored by President Trump’s nomination to assist with our nation’s civil rights agenda,” she said on X, where she has one million followers. If confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Dhillon would lead the Justice Department’s enforcement of civil and constitutional rights, including the Voting Rights Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act. The division also prosecutes hate crimes and forces reforms upon police departments marred by misconduct. Dhillon’s prominent role as a Trump attorney and Make America Great Again acolyte has long put her at odds with Newsom and San Franciscans in the famously liberal city, where she has lived for two decades. And although Vice President Kamala Harris easily defeated Trump in Bay Area counties, Dhillon is one of several locals he’s tapping to work in his administration. The incoming president appointed Silicon Valley tech investor Sacks as chief policy advisor on artificial intelligence and cryptocurrency. Sacks is an associate of Musk, who is co-leading a division in Trump’s administration to slash government spending. To lead the National Institutes of Health, an economist and Stanford professor of health policy. An outspoken critic of the nation’s public health system, he also was a leading critic of government shut-down orders and mask mandates during the pandemic. Dhillon was born in India and moved with her family to rural North Carolina as a child. She told Time Magazine in 2023 she was exposed to conservative politics by her parents, who saw alignment with the GOP’s values and their Sikh religion. Admitted to Dartmouth College at age 16, she landed a job at the Heritage Foundation, a prominent conservative think tank, and went to law school at the University of Virginia. She founded her own law firm in 2006, and later launched the Center for American Liberty, a conservative legal nonprofit. On her watch in 2021, the nonprofit sued California to challenge its pandemic-era ban on indoor worship on behalf of a Pentecostal church in Gilroy. The nonprofit also sued a Monterey County school district for allegedly encouraging a sixth grader to use different pronouns without parental consent, and represented Chloe Cole, a formerly transgender activist from the Central Valley who de-transitioned and now supports bans on gender-affirming care for minors. “If you look at the cases that Harmeet takes on, especially the civil liberties cases, I think they really show her heart for people who are being oppressed,” said Center for American Liberty Executive Director Mark Trammell. He added that Dhillon will defend the civil rights of all in her new post, without regard for someone’s identity or political orientation. But transgender activists and queer media, including the online site LGBTQ Nation, describe her as “anti-trans.” Dhillon is also a longtime politico in national Republican circles, despite having never held office herself. In 2008 and 2012, she ran unsuccessfully to represent San Francisco in the Legislature and was trounced by Democratic candidates, the San Francisco Chronicle reported. In 2023, Dhillon also fell short in her bid to chair the Republican National Committee. She was an advisor on Trump’s 2020 campaign but didn’t personally participate in its legal battles to challenge election results, said Shupe, the spokesperson. Those efforts were widely dismissed as without merit. “She did not do any of the lawsuits actually charging any of the results,” Shupe said. Elsewhere, Dhillon represented Trump in a legal victory against pornographic actress Stormy Daniels last year, as well as former Fox News host Tucker Carlson, who was accused of gender-based discrimination by producer Abby Grossberg.

On Monday, Special Counsel Jack Smith filed a motion to dismiss the Washington, D.C. election subversion case. He also asked a federal appeals court to stop reviewing the classified documents case in Florida. On Tuesday, that court granted dismissal of the case against Trump — though not against other appellees. In dismissing the cases, the Special Counsel cited the Department of Justice's long-standing policy of not prosecuting sitting presidents. "After careful consideration, the Department has determined that OLC's prior opinions concerning the Constitution's prohibition on federal indictment and prosecution of a sitting President apply to this situation and that as a result this prosecution must be dismissed before the defendant is inaugurated," Smith wrote in his court filing regarding the election subversion case. "We've used the word unprecedented a lot over the course of the last four years, and yet again this is something that is unprecedented, and Smith himself said this in his motion," former state and federal prosecutor David S. Weinstein told Scripps News. "He took great detail to point out that this was not based on the strength or weakness of the case." In a post on Truth Social , Trump said in part "These cases, like all of the other cases I have been forced to go through, are empty and lawless." He was convicted in his New York hush money case in May, but sentencing — which was scheduled for this week — has been delayed . After Smith's actions Monday, Trump now faces only the Georgia election interference case. In Georgia, Trump was indicted along with 18 allies, accused of trying to overturn the 2020 election results in the state. But that case is now on hold after the state appeals court unexpectedly removed a December hearing from its calendar. That court will issue a new order on how this case will move forward, but with less than two months before the inauguration, the future of the Georgia and New York hush money cases are still being decided. "The two state cases are likely to recede into the background — at best," former Department of Justice attorney and current partner at Gelber, Schachter & Greenberg, Barbara Llanes, told Scripps News. "We probably won't hear much about these cases following the inauguration of President-elect Trump." Defense attorneys for Trump believe his election victory is enough for the hush money case to be dismissed. They need to file a motion by Dec. 2 making that argument. Then prosecutors have until Dec. 9 to file a rebuttal. They still believe Trump should be sentenced — even if it's after he leaves office. Judge Juan Merchan will then make a decision on how this case should move forward. There's no set date on exactly when he will make that decision.

MINNEAPOLIS — Hope Walz, daughter of Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, took to social media to take a swipe at influential podcaster Joe Rogan and the men among his fanbase after the host cited the former Democratic vice presidential candidate's misstatements about his past for his backing of President-elect Donald Trump. In a video posted this weekend to her nearly 190,000 TikTok followers , the 23-year-old said a dating "litmus test" for her and her friends is whether "the guy we're talking to follows Joe Rogan on Instagram," adding that's a "red flag and we should probably stop talking to them." "It's literally never failed us. And at this point, it's like the first thing we do when someone starts talking to a new person. If they follow [Rogan], we're like, yeah, this person probably isn't a great person, probably our values don't align. So we're gonna move on from that," Hope Walz said. She also labeled Rogan, 57, as "questionable and unprofessional." "I don't know how you have the largest podcast in the world and are able to just lie and put out misinformation and straight-up lies on your platform," she said. On Monday, the X account of Rogan's podcast, " The Joe Rogan Experience ," posted an excerpt from a HuffPost article about Hope Walz's video to its 1.3 million followers, stating, "Tim Walz daughter has a Joe Rogan dating litmus test."
